AIRLINE LUGGAGE GUIDE
Look for revisions to this information in the future. In the meantime, check with your carrier for the latest rules and regulations.
CHECKED LUGGAGEAll criteria, regulations, and rules relating to checked and carry -on luggage vary from airline to airline and change from time to time but here are some basic luggage travel guidelines and travel tips:
Luggage items should not weigh more than 70 pounds.
An excess baggage fee will be charged for those luggage items weighing 70-100 pounds and luggage items over 100 pounds must be shipped as cargo.
Each piece of checked luggage or other equipment must have the name of the person traveling secured to the outside of the item.
The dimensions (l.+w.+h.) of the largest checked piece of luggage can't exceed certain dimensions, which also vary, but 62" seems to be the norm.
The maximum number of pieces of luggage allowed to be checked on a flight varies greatly also by airline and by type of plane. TWA, before it folded, allowed only 2 pieces of checked luggage on all flights except on its narrowbody planes which allowed just 1 piece of luggage.
To illustrate why it is important to check with each airline before you fly with them, here is American Airline's "checked luggage" policy: 3 pieces checked and no carry-on OR 2 pieces checked and 1 carry-on OR 1 piece checked and 2 carry-ons.
CARRY-ON LUGGAGE
Each airline determines the acceptable carry-on luggage size but the "norm" seems to be 22" X 14" X 9" with a few exceptions. Many airlines are resorting to "sizing windows" to stop the wide-spread abuse of carry-on luggage rules.
40 pounds seems to be the widely accepted carry-on luggage weight limit.
The number of carry-on luggage pieces allowed is a little vague. Some airlines include your laptop, purse, briefcase, etc., while others don't. Generally speaking, you can count on 2 pieces of actual carry-on luggage with the total not exceeding 40 pounds.
