Voltage converter usually refers to the solid state, light weight, and compact travel devices that convert the higher voltages found in most foreign countries to the lower US/Canada 110 volts but the term is often used even when referring to transformers. Some of these voltage converters have some transformer qualities for some electronic devices that use less than 50 watts
